Violent Night (2022)

An elite team of mercenaries breaks into a family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone hostage inside. However, they aren't prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus is on the grounds, and he's about to show why this Nick is no saint.

On this show I worked as a senior digital matte painter and concept artist. I worked on the night sky, moon, and cities including the projections. As well a created the concept art for certain shots including the viking flash back, and brought it to completion. See images for details.

For this shot I was in charge of creating a concept art to help bring through the vision of the client. Santa is meant to have a flashback from when he was viking with large mountains in the back and a burning village etc. Once the concept was approved, I created the matte painting and projections for the shot.

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

“Thor enlists the help of Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to fight Gorr the God Butcher, who intends to make the gods extinct.” -IMDB

My role on this project was to create concept art and key shots of the Golden Temple of the God’s in the Omnipotence city to capture the design of the stained glass and create a sense of grandeur and elegence.

DC League of Super Pets

I worked at Animal Logic on DC League of Super Pets by creating digital matte paintings for the animated feature. We had strict guidelines for the style of the movie with the look being inspired by graphic / painterly style.

As described on Rotten Tomatoes:
”Dwayne Johnson (as Krypto) and Kevin Hart (as Ace) lead an all-star cast in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming 3DCG animated comedy, DC League of Super-Pets, hitting theaters May 20, 2022.

The film is written and directed by Jared Stern and co-directed by Sam Levine, with animation produced by Animal Logic. Joining Johnson and Hart are Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, and… Keanu! The film is based on the “Legion of Super-Pets” comics by Jerry Siegel and Curt Swan, where the pets of DC Superheroes, such as Superman’s dog, Krypto, Batman’s dog, Ace the Bat-Hound, and Wonder Woman’s kangaroo, Jumpa, form a crime-fighting team of their own.”

Mitchells vs The Machines (2021)

I worked at Sony Pictures Animation’s latest Academy nominated feature animation entitled Mitchells vs The Machines on the digital matte painting team. We were tasked to create very painterly, colourful and stylized environments and skies for this movie. With my experience as a VFX matte painter, as well as an illustrator, this was a perfect match! This is the first time I create digital matte paintings for an animation feature, as I usually work on VFX movies and TV shows, but I loved it. It was very special to create backgrounds entirely painted from scratch. Mitchells vs The Machines is now out on Netflix

Ford v Ferrari (2019)

I had the chance to work on Ford v Ferrari for a few months creating digital matte paintings and set extensions and enhancements. Artwork coming soon!

In this shot, I added some road barriers and extended the race track, painted a blending patch for the plate and cg, and painted the race stadium in the background horizon. I also created the projections and set up.

In this Candy Shop shot, I was in charge of creating all of the matte painting and cg enhancements. Most of the cg was plain and I added all the details including: sky, background city, side walk and road details such as trash, weathering, oil spills, manhole covers, paint, cracks, as well all of the bricks on the buildings were replaced with my matte painting, most ottoman details such as weathering and bird droppings, details on parked cars, shop windows etc. There were also guidelines to change the cityscape to New York in the 1970’s and some research was needed to ensure this was respected.

I was also responsible for the technical aspects of preparing the cg and projecting the matte painting which needed various layers of holdouts and model clean up to work.

On the screen right hand corner of this still, you can see details I’ve added on the side walk as well as dirt and grunge in the shop opening and hints of the rest of the shot’s details that were added.

I worked on AMC’s The Terror: Infamy Season 2 as a Digital Matte Painter and a Digital Matte Painting Lead. My work involved creating set extensions matte paintings, and establishing shot environments, as well as managing the workflow, and managing sequences needing support from matte painting.

I created the matte painting over top a basic cg base and projected it in Nuke. My matte painting includes: the whole ground (gravel and grass), detailing on the various elements such as barrels and crates, all of the detailing on the buildings including cg breakup of edges, wall textures, roofs, etc. I was lead dmp on this project and the junior artist helped me break up the cg model to prepare it for camera projections, and helped with a few rooftop textures.

For this sequence, I was in charge of planning out the various views of the characters and using one plate that would be turned into 2 different views for front and back, and then meticulously integrated with the plate. On these close up shots, I created both detailed views based on the far away shots and keeping in mind the plate integration.

I created the matte painting for this establishing shot with a cg base. We had many details that were lost in the shot darkness, but my matte painting details included: all of the vegetation in the foreground and background, horizon sky and mountains, mist in the horizon trees, camp site ground and camp building details along with lights, etc.

I worked on Godzilla: King of the Monsters as a Digital Matte Painter and Concept Artist. I helped develop looks of characters in certain shots, and the mood of the environments in certain shots. I also created matte paintings for establishing shots, as well as set extensions.

For these oil rig shots, I created the background mountain matte paintings and some sky & plate integration. On the oil rig, we were three matte painters working together and we each agreed on a part of the rig to matte paint. My work was on the last frames when we see the oil rig from above. The matte painting I created for the oil rig included creating the landing pad for the helicopter and projecting it with movement as it opens up, as well as adding some realism to the cg all around the landing pad including weathering, details, and the feeling of being worked in. I created my projection set up ich involved a lot of masking due to all the parallax.

On this view and the next few images you can see the part I was in charge of matte painting on the oil rig. This included adding all of the lines and information on the landing pad including aging and oil, texture and movement to go with the animation of the pad opening up. I also added touches to all the elements around that including the deck, the vents, deck accessories such as the barrels, the crates, added hoses and junk, etc. I also matte painted what we see under the landing pad before it opens. In order to make it all work, I used geometry to mask out elements during the projection setup due to all of the parallax.

I helped create these underwater shots by projecting details and elements on the rocks and the structure. I was also in charge of painting and placing the projections of the search lights. These were then turned on and off in compositing.

The Mummy (2017)

I worked as a Digital Matte Painter and Concept Artist on the post production of The Mummy. I helped develop the look of certain shots and on certain characters and also helped with marketing material. I was in charge of creating the clouds and sky for the airplane sequence, and helped establish the look of the bird swarm. I created set extensions as well as matte paintings for establishing shots. I also had the opportunity to do matte paintings for digital makeup including the decayed look on Sargent Chris Vail (Jake Johnson), the veins on particular shots for Nick Morton (Tom Cruise), and the wounds on Ahmanet (Sofia Bootella) on a particular sequence.

I helped developed the look of Sargent Vail and his various phases of decay by creating concept art. I also created the final matte painting for the digital makeup of the character throughout the whole movie. I was in charge of developing three looks for his three phases of decay. That included the white in his eyes, the wounds, the veins, grunge and skeleton look, etc. I was in charge of projecting these in order to send to comp.

Fantastic Beasts (2016)

I worked as a Digital Matte Painter on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them creating the matte painting for the top down view of the attic when Newt (Eddie Redmayne) and Tina (Katherine Waterston) scramble to capture the Occamy to put it back into the teapot. I had to paint on basic geo to create a matte painting that had more detail, destruction and added clutter.

Suicide Squad (2016)

I worked as a Digital Matte Painter on Suicide Squad and helped with details such as removing and recreating sings for the car chase scene when Batman is following Joker and Harlequin, as well as the main square shot. I also created set extensions and matte paintings for other shots in the movie, such as when Batman swings to the Harbour and we see city lights in the background.

I did matte painting of the foreground environment and road as well as adjustments on certain buildings. For the foreground road, I did some painting to create a clean plate, and added cars and grunge to show destruction and chaos. I also separated all of it into layers to project and was in charge of that set up.

I created the matte painting in the background. This included details such as adding a hint of city with lights and buildings, some details in the water such as a buoy and some moon reflections, as well as bringing out lights the pier on the left to add some background details.

Race (2016)

I worked on Race as a Digital Matte Painter and my tasks involved creating epoch matte paintings for establishing shots as well as set extensions. For the larger establishing shots I worked closely with my lead and created some cg paint overs and elements needed for projections. For the residential establishing shots I added detailing on the CG buildings and in the background, as well as horizon details to break up the skyline, and replaced the sky. On the racetrack sequences where Jesse Owen practices, I helped with painting elements in the background as well as with projection set up.

Versailles S1 (2015)

I worked on Versailles Season 1 as a Digital Matte Painter. I helped with the establishing shots of the castles in different lighting and moods. I worked closely with my lead to create matte paintings and projections for the castle and the environment surrounding it and also worked on creating the forest. I took on the Dover castle shot and created the light passes and full set extension for it, as well as the dream sequence. I also painted over some CG in order to add detail and realism, and a few set extensions.

I assisted my DMP Lead with the Versailles Castle shots in the whole show. I helped with creating matte painting, the projections and setup, setting up and creating lighting passes (diffuse, shadow, ambient, AO, spec, etc) the rendering of the passes and final shot, as well as creating the trees surrounding the castle with a 3D program.

I created and rendered all the light passes necessary for this shot, did the matte painting of the castle and the extension of the ground, and then created the projection set up and projected the matte painting. The original plate was simply the cliff - I added the little hills and trees, and the whole castle and hill it lies on.

I created the entire matte painting in which the character is located. This matte painting was then adjusted and stylized to create a dream sequence feel to it. See both of these scenes below.

I created the matte painting for the whole background using light passes I made from the CG base, as well as set photography and other. I also created the projection layers and set up, and prepared it all for compositing.

I created parts of the matte painting on this shot, which also included other matte painting artists. I created the sky and adjusted plate elements like the mountains, added details in the fishing village, as well as in the background villages and vegetation, and made sure the projections were working properly for the final delivery.

In these shots I created burning tent assets in matte painting so that they could be used by the compositing department throughout this sequence. I provided an extra pass with embers they could light up and animate to go with the fire.
